WisDOT runs out of combinations starting with A, will debut new ‘B’ series of license plates

(WFRV) – Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation say the Division of Motor Vehicles has run out of available combinations for ‘A’ license plates and will soon be debuting a new ‘B’ series.

According to a release, it took nearly eight years and 4.7 million letter and number combinations to exhaust all of the possible combinations on DMV-issued plates starting with ‘A.’

Wisconsin DMV is proud to provide Wisconsin drivers the credentials they need to safely get from point A to point B and now we’re moving from A to B. Drivers can ‘B’ on the lookout for the new license plates when they begin rolling out statewide this month.

WisDOT officials say the first bath of ‘B’ plates is expected to begin with ‘BAA’ and will go through millions of different letter and number combinations until all of the combinations starting with ‘B’ are issued.

The DMV reports that 600,000 new license plates are issued each year leading them to expect it to take about seven years to issue every possible ‘B’ series combination through issuing new plates and automatically replacing old ones.

Officials add that the DMV does not include ‘I,’ ‘O,’ or ‘Q’ in the possible combinations for Wisconsin license plates due to how closely these letters resemble numbers.
