Manitowoc Police Department urging residents about crypto scam with callers posing as police

MANITOWOC, Wis. (WFRV) – In another report about potential scam calls in the area, the Manitowoc Police Department (MPD) is warning residents about a cryptocurrency scammer posing as an employee of the MPD.

The release also added a reminder that there will never be anybody at the MPD who contacts an individual requesting payment in Bitcoin.

Scammers can use software that alters phone numbers, getting around all sorts of barriers that may be brought up.

The MPD urges residents to be cautious and said that anybody who believes they may be victims of these scams should contact the department directly.

Fond du Lac Police officers issued a warning about a scam similar to this on Wednesday morning.
