Wisconsin officials urging travelers to ensure they have REAL ID compliant license ahead of May 7 deadline

(WFRV) – As the REAL ID Act begins on May 7, officials in Wisconsin are reminding travelers to confirm that their documents for identification are compliant with the new rules.

As those rules take effect, a regular Wisconsin driver’s license or ID may not be accepted for domestic air travel or for entering federal buildings. Travelers will have to provide a REAL ID compliant license, state ID card or another form of identification like a passport.

The most common document is the driver’s license or a normal state identification card. Both have a ‘REAL ID’ star in the top right corner.

“Wisconsin has been issuing REAL ID compliant driver licenses and ID cards since January 14, 2013,” Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Administrator Tommy Winkler said. “With renewals required every eight years, all Wisconsin residents have had the option to convert to a REAL ID.”

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is also urging the same, that people need to review their documents.

“Now is the time to make a plan for what you will use to verify your identity with TSA when traveling,” Wisconsin TSA Federal Security Director Mark Lendvay said.
